In June 1967, the 93rd Engineer Battalion departed Ft. Lewis Washington and boarded a troop transport.....the USS Upshur....enroute to Viet Nam. The trans-Pacific trip took nearly two weeks. The battalion's mission was to build the Dong Tam Base camp for the entire 9th Infantry Division. The 93rd constructed roads, water systems, electrical power plants and the 6,000 foot length Long Thanh Airfield. The following story is made from slides taken by Gary Edwards of A company, 93rd Engineer Battalion.
